Car/4x4 Insurance
Sorting out which company to use for your insurance is one of the most important tasks faced by an offroad vehicle owner. Where as with a normal family car most companies standard insurance package will surfice the 4x4 owner is faced with far more potential pitfalls, exclusions etc. So the key areas to think about on top of the normal ones are: will it be used offroad? byways or private land? offroad events? will you be towing a trailer? has it been modified?
If in any doubt then disclose the information to the insurer. eg winch, bullbar, big tyres, suspension lift all these could invalidate a policy with a "car" orientated insurer. If you have put a lot of time and money into your vehicle then you might want to discuss an agreed valuation and perhaps even provide pictures for your insurer. If you don't drive it much then possible a limited mileage policy. If it is an elderly vehicle then this too might result in a reduction in premium.
When contacting a potential insurer make sure that you give the whole story.

Insuring your trailer
If you intend to tow a trailer, and with a 4x4 this is very likely, then what cover has your trailer got? Is it covered third party, theft and contents? Possible yes to third party, probably not to the others. It's not so bad if the trailer is of low value and the contents are on the way to the town dump. However, over the years I have towed a high performance two seater glider, a brand new gyrocopter (cost over 40,000), microlight aircraft and boats. For many of you this could also include horses, other livestock, racing cars, mobile offices/shops etc. Ask the question "what is covered if we have a total write off".
It's good to talk to the insurance company, it's bad to find you have an uninsured loss.
